Notes from the Corner

Choosing Home Office Shades

Designer Solar Shades from Hunter Douglas allow you to view your windows while blocking UV rays. These shades are effective if you want to remove glare from your computer and reduce the overall light in your room. We also have other options that provide light filtering and a modern look to your space. Cellular shades have a honeycomb design that traps air at the window, creating an extra layer of insulation to keep you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Duette® Honeycomb Shades, which were the first cellular shade, and Duette Architella® Honeycomb Shades, which feature a honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design, are two excellent choices for energy-efficient home office window shades.

Shades for Nurseries or Children’s Rooms

Ally and Judy recommend Hunter Douglas’s lines of room-darkening shades, such as Silhouette® Sheer Shades or Carole Fabrics™ Custom Drapes, to provide a suitable environment conducive to sleeping. These options allow you to tilt the vanes to filter light and privacy and provide optional Light Control and Room Darkening in One with the Duolite® system or A Deux design. These panels with room-darkening blackout fabric create the perfect environment while still providing style to your space. We also offer light-blocking channels to install on the side of the window treatments, perfect for media rooms.

Shades for Kitchens and Living Rooms

With your living spaces being such high-traffic areas, something that cuts down on fabric will make it easier to clean. Ally says that because of humidity, homeowners tend to go with a faux wood blind in kitchens because of that ease of cleaning. Alternatively, homeowners tend to choose options with more fabric for the living room to showcase more of their design tastes.

Protecting Antiques and Furniture

Especially in Central Virginia, homeowners can be concerned about light’s effects on their antiques. Harmful rays can damage pieces over time if they are too exposed to the sun. Hunter Douglas offers light-filtering fabrics and liners to allow some light while protecting your pieces. Like above, designer screen shades are often recommended for these spaces.

Covering Large Picture Windows

Some homes in the area have grand windows that allow you to view picturesque views; however, if you want an added sense of privacy, most Hunter Douglas blinds can be motorized, which Judy and Ally have found make it easier for homeowners to control throughout the year.

Keeping Your Home Insulated

Duette® Cellular Shades offer ultimate energy efficiency with their insulating, cellular design. With beautiful fabric options and more choices to make them your own, these shades will keep the coolness in during the summer while retaining heat in the winter.

PowerView Options

Motorized blinds provide ease to controlling light in your space and can also be used as a security feature that makes it appear like someone is home, even if they are not. PowerView connects to most home automation systems and currently works with Amazon Alexa. Cardinal Home Center’s installers can configure these options for you during our in-home installation.
