It is sometimes said that kitchens are the heart of your home. While some use it as a major hub for entertaining, it is more often a gathering place for family and friends alike. Because we spend so much time in this area, it is worthwhile to make it your own. We talked with Dianna Campagna, a Certified Interior Decorator and Kitchen and Bath Designer with over 16 years of experience, to discuss some of the new trends in kitchens and what you can do to increase their value.

Kitchen Layouts
Before getting started with kitchens, it is important to find a layout that is functional and is suited for your goals for the space. If you like to entertain, you might want to ensure you have plenty of seating and room between cabinets and the island. However, you also want the space to work for day-to-day functionality. Another consideration is having a space that allows you to prep before cooking meals. Dianna recommends keeping in mind the triangle rule, where you have your sink, refrigerator, and cooking area all in one place.
Along those lines, you also want to ensure you have plenty of built-in storage, enough to store your dry goods, small appliances, kitchen utensils, and more. Especially if you have tight areas, built-in breakfast nooks or coffee and alcohol bars can make the most of your space and provide more countertop area.
One of the major trends we are seeing is the idea of a second pantry. These pantries are great for housing any small appliances that you do not want visible in the main kitchen space, such as microwaves, air fryers, mixers, and more. Some even include a second fridge to store leftovers. This can be a great element to build in if you are designing a kitchen from scratch, or if you have an existing home, consider transforming an old closet.
Using Butcher Block Countertops
Butcher block is a great option for countertops, both as a stand-alone countertop or if you want to pair it with another type like marble or granite. Especially for those who need a prep area, butcher block provides an excellent cutting area. Any type of wood can be used, although maple is the most common.
Dianna is also seeing sinks more and more becoming a workstation, with various accessories that can be used to get the most functionality. She also sees homeowners using different colors for their upper and lower cabinets. Incorporating floating shelves add another accent to the space and can also be used for displaying key pieces.
Updating Kitchens Without a Complete Remodel
Crown molding can make a difference in a space, adding an extra level of dimension to your kitchen. Cardinal Home Center sells a variety of crown molding patterns, and more can be special-ordered. We can also order in-cabinet and under-cabinet lighting from brands such as Hafele, or some brands can have it built-in. Storage solutions can also be ordered, and replacing a faucet can make an impact.
